Nature, Photography

Zooming in on Starlings with my Nikon COOLPIX P1000. What an intriguing little bird!

If you’ve been reading my hawk tales of late, you’ll know that I’ve been following “Andromeda, Alonso” and “Elena” while on my mountain bike rides through the hills of Southern California and in my own backyard.

I’ve always loved nature photography (and birds in particular), but I’ve never wanted to…

Poetry

A twilight moment with the crows

The air shivered with crows,
black silhouettes inked
against the bleeding sky.

Roosting for the night.

A moist thing gathered,
draping, like a shawl,
around my shoulders.

And I was one, unified, with
the spike of feather, the slice
of beak, the sharp edge of
twilight. The absence of time.

Nature, Photography

While testing out the new Nikon COOLPIX P1000 ultra-telephoto point and shoot, I inadvertently photographed these two hawks mating. I didn’t realize it until I downloaded the photos.

Flaming skies over Catalina Island

While on an evening walk through my neighborhood yesterday, I crested a hill and had to stop to catch my breath because the sunset peeking through the trees was so utterly spectacular. …

Poetry

A transcendent moment with a teapot

“Tea.” Photo ©Erika Burkhalter

I lost myself today, mid-pour, in a stream of tea.
Halfway between spout and cup, the sun
caught hold of that golden brew.

And, for a breath or two,
nothing moved.

There was no me.

There was only tea.

Then my fingers trembled
and the world came back into focus.
