Maybe not always thousands of years. There was a great article in Scientific American this month about how fast certain species are evolving and adapting to city lights — moths who don’t fly to the light, snails with lighter-colored shells to avoid overheating, dandelions who drop their seeds straight down so that they land in the patch of dirt amidst the concrete that their parent sprung from.
